Wilderness by Cao Yu  - Directed by Lilli Liang - Lights by Richard Schaefer - Costumes by Terry Leong - Pan Asian Rep - 1994
The story of an unjustly imprisoned peasant who escapes to exact his revenge on a corrupt family
of rich landholders, "Wilderness" mixes elements of didactic social naturalism, modern
expressionism (particularly O'Neill's "Emperor Jones"), Asian animism and a cosmic sense of
destiny that evokes Greek tragedy.
This production, directed by Lili Liang with a striking expressionist set by Robert Klingelhoefer, can
suggest the experience of watching a dubbed foreign film.... but the interpretation is cleanly
focused and generally involving.
